These are the final sketches for a maquette I'm going to make. It's a look at the front, back, and base of the character. The cool thing about this maquette is that I'm going to rig him up so his staff and his lamp actually light up so the sculpture becomes a functioning lamp.

This week I just downloaded an app for my iPad and iPhone called Zen Brush. It’s really slick and I’ve been playing around, just trying to get a feel for it, and I’ve been incredibly impressed with my preliminary results. I can’t wait to see what I am really capable of using this tool.

This is a sculpture I made of a Viking character that I created name Olaf Hauskludson. He was sculpted using epoxy putty and Sculpy, and painted with acrylics. I really pushed the balance of sculpture by lifting most of the energy and weight up off the base and into the air. I think this created a very nice dynamic piece. I'm glad to have him back home from being displayed at SCAD-Atlanta.

I just went to the Salvidor Dali at the High Museum of Art. It was a fantastic exhibit with tons of his work. If you're in the Atlanta area in between now and January 9th you should definitely stop by and see this exhibit. Also, there is an excellent exhibit on European design.

In my anthropology class we were discussing cultural diffusion, and we were asked to come up with two objects. One religious and one material object then we had to theorize how two separate objects might become culturally diffused and become a symbol to themselves. So Buddha and DJ headphones were mixed. This is a little drawing I did to help illustrate the combination.

This is an alien I was asked to design for my classics of science fiction class. We were discussing how in the book the War of the Worlds the aliens looked more like bears than human. This got me thinking, "I wonder if there are aliens that would hunt the bear-like aliens?" I then began to think about what hunted bears. I eventually came to the idea of rednecks. Thus, DB Avery was born.

Bio:

Name: "DB" Divinuim Binavyck Avery

Height: 5ft 2inches

Weight: 140lbs

Story:

Growing up DB got to see all the wonderful television shows that we beamed into space. He fell in love with Dukes of Hazzard and show of that nature. By the time he had grown he had fully immersed himself in the country lifestyle. He loved to hunt and felt his small planet didn't offer challenging enough game. So he sat out on a intergalactic hunting trip. Packing his guns, ammo, and dog Zeke into his spaceship the genural lee DB left home, leaving his wife and two sons Cope and Hagan behind.

Sometime into his trip he was fishing for some water dwelling creatures on a moon in a nearby galaxy when he decided that the fishing line wasn't going to work. He was gonna need the big guns, so DB grab some TNT and blasted those fish to kingdom come. The blast was more powerful than DB expected and the moon began to break apart. DB left out of there in a hurry. He came back later to survey the damage and liked one of the moon chunks so much he made it an intergalactic hunting shack that he dubbed Astro Base Jethro Tull. Now DB roams the galaxies hunting all that he can. He's even made several trips to Earth to see the sites from his favorite TV shows.

I had to design a character and incorporate elements of the sub-genius cult into it somehow. Then I have to make a story about him searching for "enlightenment" in someway, and present it in a 4 panel comic strip, a 1 page comic, and finally a 3 page comic. This, obviously, is my strip. My idea for the character's enlightenment was that he realized that the sub-genius stuff was ridiculous. Enjoy!

In my quest to really nail down the language I use in my art I did another ink study. I completed the more realistic one first. Soon after I finished it I realized I could describe the form in fewer simpler lines. So I made the top version and I believe this is really more of the direction I should be moving in.

Cast Study

This is my first ink study this quarter. During my classes last quarter, when I was doing an ink study I wanted to get my art as close to the picture as I could. This was mostly because I felt my draftsmanship wasn't up to the level I wanted to worry with the style of design as much. At the end of last quarter, mostly during the break I finally felt I reached a point where I could move on from recreation into the realm of reinterpretation. I focused on the design of the piece more. My goal was to create something graphic and clean; like a line in animation. I think that was a minor success. The biggest problem I see is the shakiness of the line work, but that'll get better as I continue inking. I also wanted to throw in the graphic black shapes to draw focus to certain areas; one area being his face, and the other area (because I'm kinda proud of this piece) being my signature.

This is a exercise in digital painting with a textured brush I got from "Ancient Japan Sketches" by Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera. It's nothing serious, but I had a lot of fun drawing it and painting the picture.

Well some of the sequential art people and I just got back from Heroes Con in Charlotte NC. I had a blast working at the table and getting to walk around and talk to all of the artists.I got a lot of good advice from people their and had a great time! Burning Passion Environment Concepts

Here are some of my environment concepts for my short "Burning Passion". These are just concepts and are not final layouts. The final film will be modeled in ZBrush and Maya, and animated in Maya. I really wanted to push my color usage. I want this film to be more about the design aspects of light and color over their realism. Each land gives off it's on feel and mood; increasing those feelings were the main thoughts behind my choices. First everything in the piece has a purple wash over it, to help tie everything together and help the main character stands out; since purple is his compliment. One example of these thought processes is his city. It is sort of a red versus yellow over purple. I feel this combination, because of it's limited range in the warm colors, heightens the hot, claustrophobic, and dirty industrial feel.

Unfortunately, this week I got really sick, so I wasn't able to spend the time on it that I wanted. I drew and colored it in an hour, for the time it took I think it turned out well.

I made these two drawings as studies in Digital coloring techniques. The top one is made by dropping in flat color on a traditionally inked drawing. The bottom was done with an under the pencil concept design type of approach, with the application of the colors applied with the method that Seok Jeong-Hyun uses in his work.

I was assigned a project where we had to draw Tarzan and then ink our picture with a brush. I love the brush so I went a little overboard trying out some different techniques. I feel like both images turned out pretty cool, though I gotta say I'm leaning to the one with the dry brushed tree; cause it looks sweeet!

Here's some random doodles from the ol sketchbook. I've been studying and practicing two things pretty heavily lately: one is George Bridgman's thoughts on planner surfaces and how things can be drawn well, showing the form, with little effort if you think in this series of surfaces that comprise everything; the second thing is from this great book I picked up called Force: Life Drawing for Animators. This book is amazing! It talks a lot about pushing poses to get this sense of force and how flowing through areas of force bring balance to the drawing. Great stuff, check it out!

This is a maquette I made for the Open House art show at SCAD Atlanta. He's the main character from a story I've had floating around in the form of notes and sketchbook pieces for a long time. Eventually I hope to make it into a graphic novel or an animation. I completed it in a little under 16hrs. this character was a lot of fun to make. I hope you guys like it as much as I do.

I found this drawing while I was trying to clean up space on my hard drive, it's old but I still think it's pretty sweet. I did this one awhile ago for life drawing. I recreated Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. It's graphite and conte on toned paper. I had a lot of fun making this because I had to find some creative ways to make the paper stained and aged looking.

Since I hate wasting time and so much of it is burnt up trying to upload animations via wireless, I used my time to practice animating a quadruped walking. I'm not sure what it is, I found the model/rig in The Art of Rigging Volume One. It still needs some clean up but I wanted to show off my work.

I went through like five or six poses/ character designs, then BOOM this one showed up on my sketchbook page, and then I pulled a Peter Griffin and was like "Hehehe sweet!"
